The Hotel is just a few minutes' walk from the Pantheon, which the Emperor Hadrian had rebuilt between 118 and 128 AD, after the fires in 80 and 110 AD had damaged the previous construction from the age of Augustus.
It was the first pagan temple to be turned into a place of Christian worship, making it the only building from Ancient Rome to have remained virtually intact and in use without interruption for religious purposes right from its foundation.

Deserving of particular mention are the tombs of the kings of Italy: Vittorio Emanuele II, whose resting place is in the chapel adjacent to the fresco by Melozzo, together with his son Umberto I and his wife, Queen Margherita.
The tombs are maintained by volunteers from the monarchist organisations.
